Ali Khamenei Reportedly Killed Amid U.S.–Israel Strikes, Iran Announces National Mourning

Death Confirmed by Iranian State Media

Iranian state media has reported the death of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, at the age of 86. Official broadcasters described him as having been “martyred” and announced 40 days of national mourning, along with seven days of public holidays in accordance with Shia Islamic tradition.

Authorities in Tehran stated that Khamenei was killed during what they described as “Zionist-American aggression,” referring to recent coordinated military strikes attributed to the United States and Israel. Independent international confirmation of the precise circumstances remains limited, and details continue to emerge.

Iranian officials alleged that the attacks caused hundreds of casualties, including senior officials and members of Khamenei’s family. State-linked sources also claimed that a missile strike hit a girls’ school, resulting in significant student casualties. These reports have not yet been independently verified by international monitoring organizations.

Western officials have not issued comprehensive public statements confirming operational details of the reported strikes.

Iran Launches Retaliatory Missile and Drone Strikes

In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military facilities in Gulf countries, according to Iranian military sources. Regional media reports indicated that installations in Bahrain — home to a major U.S. naval presence — were among the targets. Additional sites in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman were also reportedly struck.

Authorities in the affected Gulf states have not released full assessments of damage or casualties at the time of publication.

Iran’s government described the retaliation as a lawful act of self-defense under international law. Military commanders stated that operations were proportionate and warned that further action could follow if hostilities continue.

The developments have heightened fears of broader regional escalation across the Middle East. Airspace disruptions have been reported in several countries, and diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway to prevent further military confrontation.

Khamenei’s reported death, if formally confirmed through broader international channels, would mark a significant turning point in Iranian political history. As Supreme Leader for nearly four decades, he oversaw key decisions related to Iran’s foreign policy, military strategy, and internal governance.

Under Iran’s constitutional framework, the Assembly of Experts is responsible for selecting a successor. Analysts suggest that the succession process could carry major political implications for the region.
