Energy Crisis Deepens: Punjab Schools May Stay Closed Until Mid-April

Punjab is likely to extend school holidays until April 15 as part of emergency measures to tackle the ongoing energy crisis. The move aims to reduce fuel and electricity consumption, though it has raised concerns among private schools and parents over academic disruption.

The Punjab government is expected to extend school holidays across the province until April 15 as part of emergency measures aimed at managing the ongoing energy crisis and reducing overall consumption of fuel and electricity.

According to officials in the Punjab Schools Education Department, the proposed extension will apply to both public and private educational institutions. The move comes after an earlier closure period from March 10 to March 31, which authorities now believe is insufficient given the worsening energy situation.

The decision has reportedly received strong backing from the provincial energy department, which has advised limiting non-essential activities to ease pressure on the country’s strained energy resources. Punjab, being the most populous province of Pakistan, accounts for a significant share of national energy consumption, making it a key focus area for conservation efforts.

Officials highlight that the daily movement of millions of students, teachers, and school staff contributes substantially to fuel consumption. In addition, the operation of thousands of school buildings increases electricity demand. By extending the holidays, authorities aim to temporarily reduce this burden during a critical period marked by rising fuel costs and limited energy supply.

The proposed measure is part of a broader strategy under consideration by the provincial government to manage energy demand more effectively. Other steps being discussed include reducing working hours for markets, encouraging work-from-home arrangements in both public and private sectors, and discouraging unnecessary travel.

Authorities are also evaluating restrictions on large public gatherings and implementing stricter controls on excessive electricity usage in commercial areas. These combined efforts are intended to stabilize the energy situation and prevent further strain on already limited resources.

However, the plan to extend school closures has sparked concern among private educational institutions. Representatives of private schools argue that prolonged تعطیلات disrupt academic calendars and create financial challenges, as many institutions depend on monthly tuition fees to cover operational expenses and staff salaries.

School owners also warn that repeated closures can negatively impact students’ learning continuity. While some well-resourced institutions are able to transition to online classes, many smaller schools lack the infrastructure and technical capacity to deliver effective digital education.

Parents have expressed mixed reactions to the proposed extension. Some support the move as a necessary step to address the energy crisis. A resident of Lahore, Salman Ahmad, said conserving fuel and electricity should be a priority, adding that temporary school closures are acceptable if they contribute to stabilizing the situation.

On the other hand, education experts caution that extended تعطیلات may widen the learning gap between students who have access to online education and those who do not. They stress the need for alternative learning solutions to ensure that students’ academic progress is not significantly disrupted.

Officials maintain that the extension, if approved, will be a temporary measure and will be reviewed regularly based on developments in the energy sector. The ongoing crisis continues to affect multiple sectors across Punjab, including businesses, transportation, and households, as rising energy costs add to the financial burden on citizens.

As authorities weigh the trade-offs between energy conservation and educational continuity, the coming weeks will be critical in determining how long these emergency measures remain in place.
