From Islamabad to Karachi: Pakistan’s 5G Networks Promise High-Speed Future
The recent 5G spectrum auction marks a milestone for Pakistan’s technology sector, enabling faster mobile internet, improved connectivity, and opportunities for digital innovation nationwide.

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has officially entered the 5G era, with telecommunication companies announcing the commercial rollout of next-generation services in major cities following the successful completion of the nation’s first 5G spectrum auction. The event, held in Islamabad, was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who hailed the launch as a “wonderful beginning” for Pakistan’s technological advancement.
The government concluded the spectrum auction last week, selling 480 megahertz (MHz) of bandwidth for $507 million. The auction drew intense competition among the three leading mobile operators—Zong, Jazz, and Ufone—all vying for the coveted 2,600MHz band, a key frequency range for 5G deployment. Ultimately, Zong acquired 110MHz, Ufone 180MHz, and Jazz 190MHz.
Following the auction, licence agreements were formalized with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Licensing Director General Aamir Shahzad and the senior management teams of the three telecom operators. The signing officially paved the way for the rollout of 5G services in Pakistan’s major urban centers and select regional hubs.
Initial 5G Rollout Across Key Cities
Jazz announced that in the first phase of its rollout, 5G services are now active across 180 sites in Islamabad, as well as in the four provincial capitals—Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta—alongside Rawalpindi, Multan, and Faisalabad. The company emphasized that its 5G network would deliver ultra-fast speeds, low latency, and enhanced reliability, while its ongoing 4G upgrades would ensure comprehensive coverage across the country.
The operator highlighted that it had secured spectrum across all key bands—700MHz, 2,300MHz, 2,600MHz, and 3,500MHz—positioning itself as one of the most spectrum-diverse providers in Pakistan.
Ufone, meanwhile, revealed that it had acquired the largest share of the 3,500MHz band, receiving 120MHz allocation. The company is in the final stages of acquiring Telenor Pakistan, which will form the merged entity, MergeCo, holding the largest and most diversified spectrum portfolio in the country at 292.4MHz—slightly higher than Jazz’s total allocation. Ufone said the merger would enable nationwide coverage, extending 5G services to both urban and rural areas.
Zong also confirmed the commercial launch of 5G across 16 cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta. The operator announced plans to deploy and upgrade over 1,000 5G sites nationwide by 2026, further expanding the reach of next-generation connectivity. Zong, which conducted Pakistan’s first 5G trial in 2019, called itself a pioneer in the nation’s 5G development.
Government Leaders Hail the 5G Milestone
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the telecom operators and government officials for achieving a transparent and successful auction. He described the spectrum acquisition as a milestone for Pakistan, highlighting its significance for industries ranging from agriculture to technology.
Addressing Zong CEO Huo Junli, PM Shehbaz said, “I am sure you will take it to the height of glory through your hard work and untiring efforts.” He also emphasized the strategic partnership between China and Pakistan, noting that modern technology initiatives like 5G are a reflection of the growing bilateral friendship.
The premier further stressed that the benefits of 5G should reach all corners of Pakistan, including rural villages, ensuring that young people across the nation can leverage modern technology in fields such as IT and artificial intelligence (AI).
Spectrum Auction and Regulatory Developments
The PTA’s auction increased Pakistan’s total spectrum capacity threefold, raising it to over 7,500MHz. The government underscored that the process had been conducted transparently, overcoming previous legal challenges that had historically delayed telecom spectrum allocations.
IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja called the auction one of the most important events in Pakistan’s history, highlighting that it not only introduced 5G for the first time but also enhanced the quality and reach of 4G networks nationwide.
In line with future digital initiatives, the government is also working to establish an AI Council to guide national AI policy, technology development, and regulatory oversight, signaling a broader push toward modernizing Pakistan’s technology landscape.
Impact on Industry, Economy, and Society
The introduction of 5G in Pakistan is expected to transform multiple sectors. For industry and manufacturing, faster connectivity and low-latency networks will enable smart factories and IoT solutions, improving productivity and competitiveness. In agriculture, 5G-powered sensors, drones, and AI systems could revolutionize crop management and supply chain monitoring.
For consumers, 5G promises ultra-fast mobile internet, high-definition streaming, and cloud-based services, while also enabling innovations in e-commerce, gaming, and digital finance. Analysts believe the rollout could also attract foreign investment, as Pakistan positions itself as a regional technology hub.
Looking Ahead
With three major operators—Zong, Jazz, and Ufone—now actively deploying 5G services, Pakistan is set to join the global 5G landscape, providing faster, more reliable, and more widespread connectivity than ever before. The government’s commitment to transparent processes, combined with operator investment, positions the country for rapid digital transformation and opens the door to innovation in AI, smart cities, and digital enterprise solutions.
As Pakistan begins its journey into the 5G era, the coming months will be critical in ensuring network coverage, affordability, and service quality reach every citizen—from metropolitan centers to rural villages—fulfilling the vision of a digitally connected nation.
