Pakistan Launches 5G in Key Cities as Telecom Operators Expand Coverage

Pakistan has begun rolling out 5G services in major cities, including Islamabad’s Red Zone and Blue Area, with Jazz and Zong activating initial sites. Early 5G access is available on over 2,200 devices, while full network functionality will depend on upcoming device updates and further site deployments.

Pakistan has officially begun rolling out 5G services in key areas of the country, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s telecommunications sector. According to officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), multiple 5G sites have already been activated in Islamabad, particularly around high-profile and sensitive locations such as the Red Zone, Blue Area, and Parliament Lodges. These initial deployments are part of a broader national strategy to modernize mobile networks and enhance connectivity across major urban centers.

Among the leading telecom operators, Jazz has brought 180 5G sites online nationwide, while Zong has activated 150 sites. Ufone, meanwhile, is preparing to launch its 5G network once it receives the necessary equipment and devices imported from abroad. PTA regulations require all operators to update their official websites with the latest coverage information to reflect the availability of 5G services, ensuring transparency for users.

The 5G rollout comes alongside improvements to existing 4G networks. Following Pakistan’s recent spectrum auction, 4G download speeds have been capped at 20 Mbps, while initial 5G speeds are expected to reach 50 Mbps. However, users of devices from major manufacturers like Apple and Samsung are currently limited in their ability to access full 5G functionality due to the absence of device-specific software patches. PTA officials noted that a total of 103 mobile brands have activated 5G on 2,254 devices, providing early adopters with preliminary access to next-generation connectivity. Full utilization of the 5G network will depend on upcoming firmware and software updates from device manufacturers.

Experts predict that network stabilization and widespread adoption of 5G services may take approximately two years. During this period, telecom operators will continue to deploy additional sites and integrate infrastructure to ensure reliable coverage. As more equipment shipments arrive and new 5G sites go live, users can expect noticeable improvements in both 5G and 4G performance, particularly in terms of speed, latency, and network reliability. PTA sources estimate that enhancements to 4G services could become visible within five to six months of continued deployment.

The recent 5G spectrum auction was a pivotal step in this process, with the PTA allocating 480 MHz out of the 597 MHz available for nationwide deployment. This allocation provides operators with the bandwidth necessary to expand coverage and deliver high-speed connectivity to urban and, eventually, suburban and rural areas. The spectrum sale also represents a major investment in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, signaling the country’s commitment to embracing emerging technologies.

While the initial rollout focuses on major cities and sensitive government areas, PTA officials emphasize that the ultimate goal is to provide reliable 5G connectivity across Pakistan. This will facilitate advancements in mobile internet services, digital commerce, smart infrastructure, and other technology-driven sectors. Despite the current limitations in device compatibility, early deployment allows operators to test network performance, address technical challenges, and ensure a smoother transition as more devices and users come online.

In summary, Pakistan’s 5G rollout marks a significant technological advancement for the country, offering faster mobile speeds, improved network stability, and enhanced digital capabilities. With continued infrastructure development, spectrum allocation, and device updates, both 4G and 5G users can expect a more robust and future-ready mobile experience over the next few years.
