Lahore Ring Road Authorities Introduce Higher Fines and Smart Traffic Monitoring

The Punjab government is set to implement stricter traffic regulations on the Lahore Ring Road, introducing higher fines and a high-tech monitoring system to improve road safety and commuter discipline. The move comes in response to growing concerns over speeding and traffic violations along this heavily traveled highway.

Under the new proposal, the penalty for overspeeding may increase significantly from the current Rs. 500, with final approval pending from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Officials say the updated fines are intended to act as a deterrent for reckless driving, which remains a major cause of accidents in the region.

Alongside the fine adjustments, authorities have approved the development of a modern command and control centre under the Lahore Ring Road Authority (LRRA). This center will utilize advanced AI-driven cameras to track traffic violations in real time, including speeding and other unsafe driving behaviors.

The system is designed to monitor over 150,000 vehicles every day, giving authorities a comprehensive view of traffic patterns and enabling swift action against violators. Officials expect that this technology-driven approach will enhance traffic discipline, reduce accidents, and improve overall road safety for commuters.

The project carries an estimated cost of Rs. 871 million and is expected to be completed within four months. Once operational, the command center will strengthen enforcement of traffic laws while also providing critical data to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Traffic experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that the integration of AI technology in monitoring roadways is an essential step toward modernizing urban traffic management. By automating violation detection and enforcement, authorities aim to reduce human error, speed up responses to infractions, and encourage safer driving habits.

Commuters are advised to familiarize themselves with the updated penalties, as officials have emphasized that enforcement will become more stringent once the system is fully functional. Drivers are encouraged to comply with posted speed limits and road regulations to avoid fines and ensure safety for everyone on the ring road.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by provincial authorities to improve urban traffic management and public safety in Pakistan’s major cities. Plans are also underway to explore similar AI-based monitoring systems on other congested highways to address traffic-related challenges more effectively.

With the combination of increased fines and advanced monitoring technology, the Lahore Ring Road is set to become a model for traffic management in the country. Authorities are optimistic that the measures will promote safer roads, better compliance with traffic rules, and a smoother travel experience for daily commuters.
